1:1 play time BEFORE starting your toddler or preschooler’s bedtime routine will lead to a more peaceful bedtime for your entire family 🫶💤

As a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant and Social Worker, I have helped hundreds of families regain a sense of calm within their child’s bedtime routine.

Incorporating 1:1 play time allows your little to feel connected, grounded and in control. I highly recommend setting a 5-10 minute timer where you are immersed in your little’s play (free of distractions). Let them pick the activity and take the lead during play. When it is time to start their routine, it is helpful to use a transitional question instead of stating “ok, we need to get ready for bed.”

Early morning wakings are when your little is waking for the day BEFORE 6 AM. If this is happening for your baby, you might unknowingly be reinforcing this early wake up call.

Here are a few ways those early mornings can be reinforced:

⏰ Too late of a bedtime: if your little is overtired going into the night they are more likely to experience early AM wakings.

🍼 Feeding right upon waking: it is best to wait 10-15 minutes to offer your little their first feeding of the day. Take their sleep sack odd, change their diaper and then feed them in a well lit room.

😴 First nap is too early: if your little’s first nap is too early they will treat it as an extension of night sleep and it is likely that the early morning wakings will continue to happen.

💩 Upon waking: if your little is waking earlier because they have a bowel movement, they are less likely to fall back asleep (post diaper change). It is best to give them a light belly massage ~30 minutes before their bedtime routine and if they are eating solids it is helpful to avoid fibrous foods at dinner (focus them at breakfast and lunch).
